Located along the north Pacific Coast in Guanacaste province, Playa Grande is a vital part of the Marino Las Baulas National Park. After being incorporated into the park in 1990, the beach has been open to the public but remains a highly protected region because it is a nesting site of the leatherback turtles.

Marino las Baulas de Guanacaste The Tamarindo has a history almost as long and complex as its name. For thousands of years, the leatherback sea turtles that were launched at Playa Grande have returned to lay their eggs. The park’s turtles are the largest marine reptiles and one of the most endangered. The appearance of nesting turtle tourism was a double-edged sword. The money that tourists bring when they come to see turtles encourages conservation, but the presence of people and especially coastal lights confuse and disorientates turtles.

2. Surfing in Playa Grande

Although the waters may be ideal for surfing, the harsh currents and steep seabed make it a challenge to swim. However, at the north end of the beach, a short path leads to Playa Ventanas, which has a beautiful beach and a tiny bay ideal for snorkeling and swimming. The Rio Matapalo estuary is another great place to visit for bird watching and wildlife exploration. The mangrove jungle has 1,500 acres of tiny islands and narrow waterways.
