Stafylos is a village on the island of Skopelos, on the islands of the Sporades.
Stafylos is a village on the island of Skopelos, on the islands of the Sporades. It is located 4 kilometers south of the capital of Skopelos. The Stafylos area includes a bay and hotels and is reachable by local bus, private car or on foot.
1. Agios Ioannis Beach
It’s where some scenes of Mama Mia movie were filmed. The view from the chapel is great! If you have a rental car you will have no trouble driving down the winding road leading to this site which has become famous since Meryl Streep sang “The winner takes it all” to Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia 1. There is a small parking area and a pleasant café at the bottom of the hill. It is a steep climb to the top, but the view breathtaking. The chapel of Agios Ioannis is a fabulous place and very unique.
2. Kastani Beach
It’s where the trees meet the sea. It’s a beach with rear beauty. The sea is crystal clear and warm and the views spectacular. Also, visit the Milia beach.
3. Stafylos Beach
Stafilos beach is a must-visit. Near the beach, you will find the grave of Stafilos. Ruins of the palace of king Stafilos were discovered near the beach too. Many items that have been discovered in the area of Stafilos are exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Volos.
4. Venetian Castle
The Venetian Castle of Skopelos. The Venetian castle of Skopelos -of which only the remains of the wall are saved to date- is in the area of the oldest settlement on the island, Peparithos. It was repaired by the Venetians in the 13th c. and is a part of the rest of the Chora of Skopelos. The Castle is visible from any part of Chora. You will reach it by climbing the steps above Panagitsa at the edge of the port. Today it has archaeological and touristic importance, as at the top you will meet Giorgos Xintaris, one of the last remaining people of the rebetiko music.
5. Panormos Beach
Panormos, in the place of the current settlement with the same name, had an Acropolis, on the hill “Palaiokastro”, whose walls –with their exceptionally interesting building structure- are still saved in excellent condition. Panormus or Panormos was an ancient harbor on the coast of the island of Skopelos in the Northern Sporades. It is mentioned by Diodorus and by Polyaenus; they relate that around 361/0 BCE, Alexander of Pherae besieged Peparethus and occupied Panormus.
