Nowy Targ is a city in southern Poland with 34,000 inhabitants. It is the historic capital of the Podhale region. The city lies in a valley below the Gorce Mountains with the Gorce National Park, founded in 1981, at the confluence of the Biały and Czarny Dunajec Rivers.
1. Turbacz
Turbacz is the highest peak of the Gorce Mountains, a mountain range located in southern Lesser Poland. It lies in the middle of the range, and according to most sources, it is 1310 meters high. The peak itself is surrounded by dense pine forests, which makes it impossible to view the surrounding area. In the past, however, no trees were present there, and according to the 1832 sources, it was possible to see the city of Kraków with a telescope. On the top, there is a stone obelisk with an iron cross. Turbacz belongs to the Crown of the Polish Mountains. Turbacz is popular among tourists, with a junction of several trails located in front of a local PTTK shelter.
2. Sanctuary of Our Lady of Ludźmierz
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Ludźmierz in Ludźmierz, Poland is known as the Shepherdess of Podhale or in Polish Gaździna Podhale. The cult of Our Lady of Ludźmierz is strongly identified with the Góral people who live in the surrounding Tatra Mountains.
3. Gorce National Park
Gorce National Park is a national park in Lesser Poland Voivodeship, southern Poland. It covers central and northeastern parts of the Gorce Mountains, which are part of the Western Beskids. The first steps to protect this land go back to 1927 when a forest reserve was set up on land owned by Count Ludwik Wodzicki of Poręba Wielka. The National Park was created in 1981, then covering 23.9 square kilometers. Today, the area of the park has grown to 70.3 km², of which 65.91 km² is forested.
4. Polana Łapsowa Niżna
Located on the southern slopes of Gorce (Bukowina Obidowska) at an altitude of 860 m a.s.l. Koliba Na Łapsowej is an extremely attractive place for viewing, not far away and easily accessible to everyone (approx. 30 min. Undemanding march from Marfiana Góra), from which there is a beautiful panorama of the Tatra Mountains and Nowy Targ. The stylish, shingled shelter there, once frequented and vibrant with life, is today somewhat forgotten, also by locals, due to many years of absence on the tourist map. With almost half a century of history and several owners, this place has been closed and deteriorated in recent years. Now, thanks to new Hosts, Łapsowa Polana is reviving again.
5. Bór na Czerwonem
The Bór na Czerwonem reserve is one of the oldest nature reserves in Poland. It was established by the decision of the Nowy Targ City Council on October 13, 1925. Initially, it operated under the name “Na Czerwonem” in a small area.
