Athens is the capital of Greece. It was also in the heart of Ancient Greece, a powerful civilization and empire. The city is still dominated by 5th century BC landmarks, including the Acropolis, an acropolis on top of a hill with ancient buildings such as the Parthenon Temple. The Acropolis Museum, along with the National Archaeological Museum, holds sculptures, vases, jewelry and much more from ancient Greece.

1. The Acropolis

The Acropolis

When you think of Athens, think of these ancient buildings. You will try to name a more iconic sight in any part of the world. Perched on a rocky countryside for 2,500 years, they are now absorbed in a vast modern metropolis, but you will remain dazzled.

2. The National Garden

The National Garden

Housed in the heart of Athens, the National Garden offers a beautiful haven from the bustle of the capital. This magnificent park was commissioned by Queen Amalia, the first queen of Greece, in 1838 and completed two years later. The Garden covers 16 hectares of narrow pebbles and lakes, as well as a small zoo.

3. The Plaka And Monastiraki Neighborhoods

Street in Plaka, Athens

Stretching out under the shadow of the Acropolis, Plaka is one of the world’s oldest neighborhoods. Plaka boasts a wealth of ancient sites, small museums, historic churches and picturesque small squares buzzing with restaurants and cafés. Monastiraki is one of the oldest and busiest areas of the capital, packed with rooftop bars, ancient sights, and huge markets. Go shopping at the Monastiraki flea market, squeeze your way through thronging pedestrian alleys, and peruse shops filled with antiques, handmade jewelry, and Greek handicrafts.

4. Temple of Poseidon

This marble temple is located around 70km away from Athens and was first built by ancient Athenians to honor Poseidon and guide sailors safely home. All that remains now is a series of towering columns that look marvelous against a glorious Greek sunset.

5. The National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens

The National Museum of Contemporary Art

This place is full of art. Let’s expect exhibitions of Greek and international art in all media, from painting to video to experimental architecture. In addition, the huge museum house has its own fascinating story: it’s actually a former brewery – the Greek beer Fix was once here.
